Soda Pop

I was reading in my science today and they were talking about some of the things that can be dissolved in different types of liquids and pop was one of them.

Here is a really interesting article on “Liquid Candy” (aka Soda Pop)

Here is some of what the article said

Americans consume gargantuan quantities of carbonated soft drinks and suffer untoward health consequences. Companies annually produce enough soda pop to provide 557 12-ounce cans - 52.4 gallons - to every man, woman, and child.

That is a big amount of pop, and i don’t even drink pop that much…it makes you some what grossed out!

Here are two more

“Carbonated soft drinks are the single biggest source of calories in the American diet, providing about 7 percent of calories; adding in noncarbonated drinks brings the figure to 9 percent. Teenagers get 13 percent of their calories from carbonated and non carbonated soft drinks.”

“Consumption of carbonated soft drinks peaked in 1998, when consumption was 56.1 gallons per person. In a historic turnaround, consumption was 7 percent lower in 2004. And because some people have switched to diet sodas, the consumption of caloric soft drinks declined by 12 percent.”

I mean come on here 56.1 Gallons per person!!!

Tell me what you think.

Speech *Again*

Hope you enjoy this one!

Hello my name is Katie Braun

I will be talking about George Stokes and how as a Christian he impacted Modern Science.

George was born on August 13, 1819 in Skreen, Ireland. His father was a minister and his mother was a minister’s daughter. As the youngest of six children, he was brought up in a very religious family.  George had a good educational background that, combined with his Godly heritage, prepared him for his life’s work in science.

At the age of 16, George went to Bristol College in England; there he remained there for 2 years preparing for Cambridge. At Cambridge he studied Mathematics and Science. His studies in science were considered more important because they layed the foundation for his work in modern engineering and the science of fluid mechanics.

After graduating from Cambridge, he remained there and tutored private students. George finally married Mary in 1857. That same year he became President of Victoria Institute. He remained there until his death in 1903.  Before his death he wrote a book on Natural Theology. He emphasized his belief of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

George Stokes successful career in mastering and teaching fluid mechanics along his faith in Jesus Christ demonstrates that a belief in God and love for true science can be combined into a successful career.

Thank you,

Speech

This is my second and finial speech and this is the one I will be taking to the competition. This is not fully finished we finish is as we go each week. It is supposed as close as you can to 10:00 minutes and i got all the way to 6:34! so here it is….

Hello my name is Katie

Intro: Today I will be talking about Cell Phones and how they can be some times a nuisance. Here are the three main places I will be talking about School, Public Places, and Cars.

I. Schools.
Topic sentence: Cell phones have become a nuisance in schools. Between text messaging, drug dealing, and cheating during class, many state governments have thought about a complete ban on cell phone use in school buildings. Currently leave such decisions up to administrators to decide if cell phones will be allowed in school. However, it is not just up to administrators, parents and students have a responsibility to use their cell phones wisely.

A. The Administrators and teachers have done what they can for the kids who don’t use discretion, here are some examples Quote from CBS “Elizabeth Casanola carries her cell phone everywhere-even through the metal detectors at her school” Using metal detectors on one of the ways the administrators have tried to fix the problem and here is another option teacher have used Quote from Teaching Today “Have students label their cell phones and place them in a basket at the beginning of class and return them to students at the end of class.” B. Parents want their children to have cell phones at school for safety reasons. However, parents must take responsibility to train their children in proper cell phone use. (How?) After being alive for more then 13 years I have noticed one of the thing most parents worry about is training there children right. While reading some of theses articles I have noticed that even they want there kids to use discretion when using there cell phones in public place and even school, it seems to me that even the kids want other students to use discretion because they do not want to lose there privileges with there cell phones in the schools.
C. Students need to exercise self control and obey the school rules. All schools have cell phone rules and if you do not abide by the rules the you will get a ban but on your school and if you do not abide by the ban rules then you will have the Government coming in and putting laws so that you will not be even allowed to bring in Cell phones. (possible quote) One of the ways you can help not put a ban on your school is if you yourself abide by the rules and and also encourage other students by them use there cell phones with discretion. Students are getting around the rules in some schools where there is a ban, here are some examples they will wrap their cell phone in a sandwich wraps or will pay a small fee to have someone hold them during classes and then go get them after classes.

II. Public places

Topic sentence:
The dilemma in public places is that most people are not considerate of other people around them while they are using their cell phones. Often creating uncomfortable and distracting situations. One frustrated person wrote in The Wittenberg Torch “Every single one of the six people walking in front of me and behind me was chatting on their cell phones. The phones came in all shape, sizes, and colors, just a unique as their users, who did not seem to care that other people might be listening to their conversations”
A. Recently I walked into my local Library and saw a sign that said “Please do not use cell phones in the Library.” Was the request taken seriously? No. I saw people talking on their cell phones and heard them ringing constantly. A few days later my sister went to the library hoping for a quiet place to study for an exam. The silence was broken by a woman whose cell phone rang while she was attempting to check out books. She started talking quite loudly and the lady that was checking her out did not do any thing to keep her quite or to even tell her that you are not allowed to use cell phones in the Library! Did the library employees do any thing to enforce the rules? No. They just let them do it.

B. Restaurants are another place where cell phones have become a nuisance. ” Danny Meyer, owner of ten successful New York City restaurants, put the kibosh on cell phone use in his dining rooms six years ago. Every time the phone rings, it’s not only an interruption on their time, it’s an interruption on everyone else who’s trying to enjoy the restaurant”

C. While reading these articles for this speech every single article said I wish more people would use the Blue Tooth, which is a new technology system that is making it a lot easier for people to drive, which brings me to my final point about Driving.

III. Cars/Driving
Topic sentence: Thirteen states have a ban on teens using cell phones. Most recently in the state of California there has been a Government law passed that Kids under the age of 18 are not allowed to use cell phones in cars. This is one of the way the Government will intervene if we do not abide by the small and simple rules. Now do you really want the Government coming in and making a bunch of laws that were rules but now have to be law because there were people who did not abide by the rules?
A. Lot’s of people say but what if there is an emergency? If it is an true emergency the most likely you will be all ready stopped of pulled over. But the problem is what do people consider and emergency? if you forgot your lunch, of some school book? You could either pull over or maybe wait till you get to school.

Conclusion: If we do not obey small laws and neglect our cell phones eticate, then the government will step in with laws. Do you want the Government laminating your freedom? Then limit yourselves.G.K. Cherston said”When you break the big laws, you do not get freedom; you do not even get anarchy. You get the small laws.”

Thank You

I hope you liked it.

George Washington Quote

” The hour is fas approaching, on which the Honor an Success of this army, and the safety of our bleeding Country depend. Remember officers and Soldiers, that you are freemen, fighting for the blessing of Liberty–that slavery will be your portion, and that of your posterity, if you do not acquit yourselves like men.”–George Washington

Charles Martel (a school presentation)

My talk today will be about Charles Martel. He lived from 686-741 and lived in the Frankish territory. To understand why Charles is significant in Medieval history we have to look a generation back and talk about his father Pepin the Great.

Charles Martel’s father Pepin was Mayor of the Palace to the King (also know as Kings of Do nothing) The “do nothing Kings” were kings who sat around all day and partied and got drunk. they would take the name as a King but were not like really Kings they would have a Mayor of the palace make all the decisions for them and all the battle planning.Every year Pepin would parade the King through the streets but that was only once a year for the rest of the year the people would not see the king.

During that time Charles was born on August 23 686 AD. When Pepin died in 714 AD, Charles took the Pepin place. While he was Mayor he fought many wars including the most famous one which most of us know about, Called the War between the Saracens. The Saracens are a group of people who are Muslims. They became Muslims When Mohammad the Great created the Religion Islam because he did not fully agree with Christianity nor Judaism. Who came across the Pyrenees from Spain and invaded the land of the Franks intending to establish Islam there. Their army was led by Abd-er-Rahman the Saracen Governor of Spain. In October of 732 for six day there were only little skirmishes but on the seventh day there was a huge battle, during the battle Abd-er-Rahman was killed that ended the battle, but the Franks came out to the field the next day thy found that the Saracens had fled and left all their plunder (their riches). It was decided that after the battle that was declared that Christianity was the main Religion of Western Europe not Islam. Though the Saracens fled from the battlefield of Tours, they did not leave the land of the Franks. Charles had to fight other battles with them before the were finally defeated. After the Battle with the Saracens Charles was looked upon as the Great Champion of History. Charles did not actually start out with the last name Martel, the last name Martel was given to Charles after the battle of the Tours. The last name Martel (of in French pronounced Mar-to) means “Hammer” and that is how Charles got the name
Hammer. To the day of his death, in 741, he was in reality, though not in name, the King of the Franks.

After Charles Martel died on October 22, 741 his son Pepin (also know as Pepin the Short) succeeded him. Pepin the Short took Charles place as place mayor, just as Charles did to his father Pepin the first. After being mayor for a few years, Pepin asked several of his fellow men to go to the Pope in Italy and ask him who should be the King? The person with the name of the person with all the power and authority? The Pope said why the person with all the power and authority. So Pepin was crowed King on Christmas Day 751 and anointed with oil by the Pope in 754.

Pepin died in 768. And Charlemagne the Great succeeded him.

I will also be posting more of theese as the weeks and months go on.

Video Games that Keep Kids in Shape

Intro: Video games and their use are controversial in many different homes. They’re most commonly used for exercise, education and entertainment. The idea of using video game as exercise caught my attention while reading Time Magazine this past week. This article title caught my eye “Video games help keep kids in shape.” According to the article, 17% of US children are overweight. Can video games help keep kids in from becoming obese which ?

According to Dr. John Ratey, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of Spark, an upcoming book about exercise said, “Physical education used to be a joke, That has changed simply because we are catching up with the gamer generation.” Video games are not just for the home anymore. Gym teachers are using them to help teach in the public schools. Some of the games being used are bike racing, weight lifting, bench press and leg lifts. For example, Kim Mason, a phys-ed director in Rogers, Ark persuaded her public-school district to invest $35,000 in brand-new video-game equipment. Mason is not alone, 35 states and over 2000 school have set up fitness centers where the children use not just their thumbs but their whole bodies in exercise while playing the games. Many people believe that the games trick children into the exercises habit, hopefully life long helping to curb obesity.

“Alasdair Thin, a researcher of human physiology at Heroit-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, found that college students burned twice as many calories playing an active video game in which they dodged and kicked for 30 minutes as they did walking on a treadmill. Studies have not yet shown how the new games measure up against a real session of, say, soccer.
But while gym teachers claim that it is effective, there are critics who believe there is a downside to children using video games for exercise.

Namely, that the children will become bored and the games are expensive.

“Video games are not the answer,” says Warren Gendel, founder of Fitwize 4 Kids, a chain of traditional children’s gyms. “Kids will get bored and be back on the couch.”

The cost for a video game system in the school is 4,000 per unit or you could spend $5 per unit for a traditional kick ball. Further, the video game has only one use, the kick ball can be used for many different sports and exercise activities.

I would rater go outside and ride my bike then sit in front of a TV and play Video games. And while there might be short term benefits but long term it will not fix obesity.

I will be posting more of thees as the months go no.

Abram’s Journey Part 1

Hello Smile I have not posted I a while so I guess I will do it now.

What have your families been doing in school? Well, we have been learning about Ancient Mesopotamia and Abram (Abraham). It has been very interesting to learn how God told Abram to leave his kindred and “Ur” and go to the “Promised Land.” But Abram sinned and took with him, his kindred. About halfway, they came to a place called Heran which means ” desolate and fruitless.” They stayed there for six years. During that time, his father died. Then they left Heran and continued on their journey to Canaan.

Meet Jess: A Homeschooled American Girl

From the American Girl website,

With her first step off the airplane and into bright tropical sunlight, Jess McConnell begins an adventure. She and her parents are spending five months at an archeological dig of ancient Maya ruins in the Central American country of Belize. It’s Jess’s first time out of the United States. It’s her first time being home-schooled. And it’s her first trip without her older brother and sister to keep her company. But Jess is excited to explore a new place all on her own. She’s ready for adventure and anxious to discover just who Jess is.

Jessica’s Diary, Part 2

May 6th  We are getting very close to going into hiding.  Well we are starting to pack the food.  I am packing this (diary), clothes, all my school work, and my personal stuff.  I forgot to write this yesterday, we are to wear a six pointed star it’s the symbol of a Jew.  Rachel is packing everything that she can put in her school bag.  I told her to pack  only necessary to stuff.  Jacob is packing college school work, clothes, and personal stuff.  William is packing school work, and since he might graduate well in hiding, if he does he will use Jacobs’s school books.  William is packing personal stuff too.  I just heard terrible voices, it sounded kind of German :(  My hands are shaking too much to write.  I will try to write later!! )

Later: Whew, that is the closest I have seen a Nazi solider.  Mom and Dad were hiding, and I didn’t know that so I went down stairs and the Nazi solider was leaving so I crept down quietly and thankfully he didn’t see me!! I went and told Mom and Dad and told them they were clear.  Then told them about the Nazi solider they thought I was very brave!! :)  Hope I can be brave like that in the future!!

~Elizabeth~
